Only few polishing brushes can compete with cotton velvet cloth when you want to produce the ultimate shine. Our yak hair shoe shine brush is one of those brushes, if not the world's best and most rare polishing brush. Used as a finishing brush, yak hair shoe shine brushes produce a high gloss effect faster than any other type of brush, including goat and horse hair.
The yak is a long-haired domesticated bovid found throughout the Himalaya region of south Central Asia, the Tibetan Plateau and as far north as Mongolia and Russia. The density of the yak's natural coat is legendary and it's hair is distinguished by it's coarse, crooked shape.
This yak hair's density is preserved in the making of the brush. The large number of fine hairs mean that the brush has an extra-large polishing surface that produces a bright shine with minimum effort.
The yak hair is entirely pinned by hand, which is the only proper way to make a yak hair brush. The work demands skilled brush makers, and it takes time.
Our handmade shoe shine brushes are entirely handcrafted, one-by-one, by a small group of artisans in collaboration with Berlin's Institute for the Blind. Using techniques that originated in the Alps and have remained virtually unchanged for over 120 years, a small team of twenty skilled workers, who are either blind or disabled, carefully pull yak hair bristles through the handle, using brass wire to secure the bristles into place. The two-piece handles, fastened together by brass studs, are hallmarks of a handmade brush. Incredibly time consuming, the result is a sturdier brush with almost no bristle loss and that is far more hard-wearing.
In our pursuit to bring the highest-quality, artisan-made shoe care items to our customers, The Hanger Project is incredibly proud to have the honor of offering such a high-quality, entirely handmade brush to our customers. As far as we know, there are only two companies in the world that continue to produce shoe shine brushes by hand: Edoya from Japan and this provider from Germany.
