How to Refill Your Le Grand Cling Lighter
What You’ll Need:
-
S.T. Dupont Red Butane Gas (for soft flame)*
-
S.T. Dupont Yellow Butane Gas (for torch flame)*
-
A clean, lint-free cloth, preferably made for jewelry or brass.
*Please check the listing for the link to the appropriate refill color or check the gas cap for a color lacquered in.
Steps:
- Ensure the lighter is completely cool and not recently used.
- Turn the lighter upside down and locate the refill valve.
- Lift the tab with your nail or a pick carefully then unscrew it to reveal the gas input.
- Using the correct gas cartridge, firmly press the nozzle into the valve. Hold for approximately 5 seconds.
- Allow the lighter to rest for 1–2 minutes to let gas stabilize and reach room temperature.
- Wipe down any excess and confirm no gas is leaking.
Important: Never mix gas types. Use only S.T. Dupont butane for optimal performance.
How to Ignite and Use the Flame
The Le Grand features a dual-flame system:
-
Soft Flame (for elegant lighting)
-
Torch Flame (for outdoor or precision use)
To Ignite:
-
Flip open the cap to expose the ignition roller.
-
Strike the flint wheel downward in a smooth, controlled motion.
-
The soft flame will engage.
-
For torch flame: continue holding the roller down — a second flame will emerge in the center.
Tip: The iconic "cling" sound occurs when opening or closing the cap—this is the hallmark of a properly functioning Le Grand lighter.
How to Adjust Flame Height
-
Insert a small flathead screwdriver into the flame adjustment screw at the base.
-
Turn clockwise to decrease flame height, or counterclockwise to increase.
-
Always test the flame after adjusting to ensure safe ignition.
Replacing the Flint
When your lighter no longer sparks reliably:
-
Open the flint compartment (located beneath the roller mechanism).
-
Remove any remaining flint dust.
-
Insert a new S.T. Dupont flint (gray flints are correct for Le Grand).
-
Reassemble and strike the wheel to test.
Troubleshooting Tips
-
No spark? Check the flint for wear or blockage.
-
Weak flame? Refill butane and check for proper adjustment.
-
No ignition at all? Ensure the cap is fully open, and gas is flowing.
If problems persist, contact our customer service for assistance or S.T. Dupont warranty evaluation.
Long-Term Storage
-
Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
-
Always empty the gas before long-term storage to preserve valve integrity.
-
Avoid storing in checked luggage during air travel due to pressurized fuel.
